Lizzie Rose

Working fast and in layers, drawing into and developing a sense of undercurrent: the delicacy of drawn line contrasting with the broad sweep of paint. Memory and feeling are important.

Lizzie’s landscape paintings come from an active involvement with the landscape: hill running and Mountain Rescue. They are a reflection of immersion in wild place. Lizzie lives and works in Argyll in the West of Scotland. The coast is near, the islands accessible and mountains have always been her horizon, ridges her run routes, and places of solitude and inspiration.

Drawing is important: the energy of line and the simple mark making of a pencil.

“The images and shapes of this landscape giving a sense of home and roots. Climbing to the tops in all seasons, feeling the grandeur and age, the land spreading out on all sides, the strength and peace in these places. The journey is important, and the resulting work can encompass more than a single place, reflecting movement and time travelling. It is of the land, its might and beauty, it ferocity and calm.

My recent work is pared down. Simple lines: pathways feet have taken, outlines of mountains, trees passed, islands visited. Tokens of places seen and travelled to.”

Lizzie exhibits widely throughout Scotland, the UK and overseas, and is known for her dynamic landscape paintings, drawings, and for calm reflections of her local landscape and environment. Many of her works are held in private collections in the UK and further afield. Lizzie was short-listed for the 2008 Jerwood Drawing Prize.
