Stuart Semple

Stuart Semple (b. 1980) is a leading British artist and curator. Currently his focus is on the honest portrayal of the ‘nowness’ of contemporary life through his drawings, paintings and prints. His endeavor is to balance the technical application of his materials alongside truthful representation of emotive opinion on his subjects. As such Semple’s works often articulate a sociological criticism through a unique and true-to-himself voice resulting in a distinctive contribution to the history of image making.

Stuart’s works can be found in major international collections including the Getty, Langen, David Roberts and Niarchos foundations. Stuart regularly exhibits worldwide and has held successful solo exhibitions in Italy, Hong Kong, London and New York. Stuart’s works have also been well received during top international art fairs including Art Basel Miami, Hong Kong art Fair, Frieze and Art Chicago.

Semple’s works have been featured across the media including BBC, Esquire, The Times, The Telegraph, The Art Newspaper, Evening Standard, Vogue, i-D, Aesthetica, Art Review, Observer, Art of England, ArtForum & Blue Peter.

Semple’s iconic performance ‘HappyCloud’ at Tate Modern in London in which he released thousands of bright pink smiley faced clouds into the London skyline made headlines worldwide

Stuart recently founded the Aubin Gallery in Redchurch Street, focused on representing, showing and collecting the best new generation of British artists.

Outside of the artworld, music is his passion within which he has worked with The Futureheads, Lady Gaga, The Prodigy and the Subliminal Girls. Stuart also regularly collaborates or consults for leading brands including Selfridges, Levis, Umbro & Moncler.

Stuart advises the Design and Artists Copyright Society as a member of their creators’ council, writes monthly for the UK’s widest distributed art magazine Art of England and blogs occasionally for the Guardian online. Stuart is also a member of the expert panel for CoolBrands.
